Painted Door Inserts

 Back

This was an interesting project,
but ultimately abandoned.

The door insert shown in this
picture is covered in MrMikes Silver Metallic leather.

It was replaced with a
painted fiberglass door insert.

Here you can see
the leather covered insert has been removed
and replaced with the
(un-painted) white gel-coat fiberglass insert.

Being white it is difficult to see
the molded shape in the above picture.

This part was made using the original
plastic insert to create the mold.

This new part is a duplicate in
size & shape of the original part,
but has a smooth
gel-coated paintable surface.

Here you can see a pair
of these fiberglass inserts after
priming / painting / and clear-coat.

The color of the paint is the same
as that used on the dashboard
instrument bezel, airbag cover,
and (later) center radio bezel.

In this case Silver, but easily
Electric-Blue, Inferno-Red, etc.

Attached to door with
3M double-sided tape,

and armrest re-attached.

While the initial concept was to provide paintable door inserts
to provide the opportunity of bringing the exterior paint into the interior
(and to expand on the idea used on the factory painted dashboard parts)
the project was ultimately abandoned due to the lack of customer interest
(the lack of customer interest in paying for the 4 parts).
