Rear Radar Install Instructions

 Back

Sensors alert you of objects as you reverse.
Get a kit from a local store / eBay / whatever.

Expect to pay WAY under $100.

Get a 4 sensor system:
It will look something like this:

Read the system instructions!

Remove the rear bumper of your PT:

Remove the rear tail lights and cargo edge trim.
Remove the bolts inside the rear wheel arches.
Remove the back-up lights,
loosen but not remove the bolts behind the lights.
Unplug the license plate lights.

Remove the 4 nuts under the cargo edge trim
that hold the bumper cover to the car.
(this can be tricky)
Remove the 4 pins from under
the tail lights.

The bumper cover will now come off.
I placed the bumper cover upside down
on a large flat surface.

A square was used to find the
'true' edge of the bumper.

A string was taped across to establish
a straight edge, and the positions for the sensors marked.
A small hole saw was provided with the sensor kit
to make the appropriate sized holes in the bumper cover.

I used larger hole saws to form the voids
in the Styrofoam bumper support.

 > Easy Tip <
Make the holes in the Styrofoam LARGE.
This will allow the Styrofoam support to continue
to "move around a bit" as it is prone to do,
without pushing the sensors out of position
in the bumper cover.
Connect the wires / cover with loom / and position for re-install.

Route the wires to the right hand side of the car,
where the jack is located.
Position the electronic module,
and tap into the back-up light power,
inside the jack storage area.

Re-Install the bumper cover,
plug in the license plate lights,
tighten the bolts behind the back-up lights,
reattach all the bits.

Run the wire for the dash display
to the front of the car.

This kit came with a display that
can mount on the dashboard.
I used the opportunity of adding an
overhead console from a Chrysler LHS
(perfect color)
to mount the back-up display
in the (now useless) compass window.
I ordered the sensors in Black to match the car,
they look good.

After living with these sensors for a year
I highly recommend this modification to
any PT owner.
