US 1 runs south through the Florida Keys, extending 115 miles southwest from the mainland. Mile markers designate places along the way. Mile marker 106 is in Key Largo, at the beginning of the Keys, mile marker 0 is located in Key West at the far end of the island chain.
The blue-green panorama of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, dotted with lobster traps and sailboats, is not unlike the scene that greeted passengers on Henry Flagler's  Overseas Railroad which linked the Keys to mainland Florida from 1912 until 1935.
Flagler's railway made the Keys accessible from mainland Florida, and his Seven-Mile Bridge was considered an engineering feat.

Marathon: The Heart of the Keys

Marathon appears as an emerald isle set amid a sea of turquoise. Glance at a chart and you'll notice that Marathon is
smack dab in the middle of the Keys.
At the same time Marathon has retained the charm of its roots as a 19th-century fishing village, it boasts resorts, luxury accommodations, and the conveniences of a modern community.
For more information on Marathon, drop by the Chamber of Commerce at
Mile Marker 53.5 or call 1-800-262-7284.
